A Good Day For The Arctic Monkeys
(extract from NME.com/blog - 29/01/08)
So, once again, the Arctic Monkeys have cleaned up in the Shockwaves NME Awards nominations, scoring seven, and taking their total to 15 in the past three years. This generation's Oasis? Certainly the bloke interviewed on Sky News today who bears more than a passing resemblance to me seemed to think so... But will they win on the night? Only you can decided, so get voting now!
Last night we celebrated nomination day with our traditional media pub quiz - essentially a huge piss up at which various newspaper journalists and TV folk complain that the questions we've set are too hard, before drunkenly slurring their way through the hits of the day accompanied by the guys from Rockaoke.
This year's contest produced a tie between The Guardian and Radio One's news team, the former eventually prevailing after a ludicrous tie-break that involved singing Bon Jovi's 'Living On A Prayer'.
Prize for the most-over enthusiastic reveler, however, goes to the guy from the BBC's Culture Show who nipped outside for a smoke and promptly passed out, falling flat onto his face - not to mention his pint glass - and breaking his nose in the process. Ouch.
